Erectile Dysfunction – Learn About Factors That Put You At Risk!

Commonly referred to as ED, it is a common problem for the Male but must be treated in an individualized way.

By definition, ED is when a man can’t get an erection to have sex or can’t keep an erection long enough to finish having sex.

Causes and Risk factors:

ED has been noted to be seen in people, who have the following:
1. Smoking/Tobacco/Alcohol use
2. Obesity
3. Advanced age (>60 years)
4. History of diabetes
5. Hypertension
6. Atherosclerosis (hardening of Arteries)
7. Stress/Anxiety or Depression
8. Some medications, such as antidepressants, painkillers and medicine for controlling blood pressure
9. Fatigue
10. Brain or spinal-cord injuries/ Multiple sclerosis/ Parkinson’s disease/Stroke
11. Hypogonadism (which leads to lower testosterone levels)
12. Radiation therapy to the testicles
13. History of some surgical procedures for prostate or bladder

Causes:

ED has both physiological and psychological reasons.

  • Most common psychological reasons are strained relationships, performance anxiety, and other life stressors.
  • Physical causes include reduced hormone levels and other medical conditions like obesity, diabetes, and hypertension (as discussed above).
Diagnosis:

ED has both physiological and psychological reasons.
While ED is easy to diagnose medically, the truth is that not many would be forthcoming for a diagnosis. Given that this issue could be a jolt to the “manhood,” it is often not brought out in the open for discussion. Once that is done, the following steps can help in diagnosis.

1. Medical history and specifically sexual history
2. Physical examination
3. Blood and urine tests for disorders/causes leading to ED (like Blood pressure, Blood sugar, cholesterol levels etc. to identify overall health)

Management:

1. Sexual counselling involving the couple. Once they open up and get comfortable, the problem vanishes. Performance anxiety which is a major cause is taken care of, and ED is no longer an issue. Aligning the couple’s expectations also is very essential.
2. Lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, moderating alcohol abuse, healthy eating habits, and moving away from a sedentary lifestyle help treat ED
3. Medicines which enhances blood flow to the penis (PDE-5 inhibitors)
4. Vacuum devices
5. Penile Implants

The treatment is individualized and depends on the cause
